Using Heatmaps to Improve Website Conversion

Hey, fellow website owner! 👋

Feeling the frustration when visitors pop in and out of your site like a game of virtual tag? It can be frustrating to have a website’s not converting your visitors to buyers!

I’ve been there too. You’ve got this awesome website, killer content, but somehow, they’re bouncing away. Don’t worry any longer though! There’s this incredible tool you can use to get some seriously important and deep insight on why.

Today, we’re diving into a secret weapon that’ll help us crack this case wide open: heatmaps.

Yep, this is a magic tool that shows us where visitors click, scroll, and linger.

I’ll also introduce you to a free tool that you can start using today to get your heatmaps set up on your website.

Ready to unveil the truth behind these bounce rates? Let’s do this!

What’s the Deal with Heatmaps?

Hold up, you might be wondering, “What’s a heatmap?” Imagine a treasure map, but instead of X marking the spot, your site lights up like a disco floor. Those lights? They’re like breadcrumbs left by your visitors, telling us what they’re up to. Heatmaps are like our web detective, helping us understand what’s going on.

Heatmaps 101:

Click Heatmaps: These babies tell us where visitors are clicking the most. Buttons, links, pics—everything! Ever wondered if your “Sign Up Now” button is a hit or miss? Click heatmaps got your back.

Scroll Heatmaps: Ever wondered how far down the page people scroll before they vanish? Scroll heatmaps are the crystal ball that shows if our awesome content is getting its moment of fame.

Movement Heatmaps: Ever wondered where the cursor ballet is happening? Movement heatmaps are like backstage passes, showing us where the action’s going down. These are typically reviewable by you, the website owner, as a short video recording of the website visitor’s mouse actions. Below, I’ll introduce you to a free tool that you can use to get some seriously good feedback!

Let’s Get Digging:

Time to unleash these heatmaps and figure out what’s happening. You can use heatmaps to help you in a few ways:

1. Tracking Down User Confusion:

Heatmaps reveal if visitors are clicking where they shouldn’t. If they’re wandering in the maze, it’s time to check if your website customer journey is confusing. Use your tool to see where customers are getting lost then add new pages or a better menu to your website to try to reduce the confusion. Once you’ve tried to fix this on your own, show your website to some friends or family and ask them to navigate your website. They can then give you feedback on where you could improve further.

2. The Dead Zone Dilemma:

You can use heatmaps to detect if some portions of your pages or content are being completely ignored. These become “dead-zones” on your website. Once you’re aware of these spaces on your website you can either shorten the content, make it more legible or move it elsewhere – depending on why the visitors might be skipping over it.

3. Nailing the Call-to-Action:

As you view the feedback from your new tool, you’ll see if there are certain buttons or Call to Actions (CTA’s) which are being clicked more often than others. Now you can optimize your other CTA’s to be similar, or reduce and remove some unecessary ones. You might even find that visitors are stopping their scroll for a bit longer on a section that doesn’t have a CTA – and now you know you should add one!

4. Mobile Maneuvers:

Mobile users are the VIPs of the online world. With movement heatmaps you’ll see where your mobile visitors are drawing their attention too. Optimized your layouts for your mobile visitors even further to gain a better conversion rate. Remember: mobile users want quick, easy to read content with easy-to-click buttons.
